Words Wednesday: Alice in Wonderland

Date: November 28, 2016Author: Jocelyn 4 Comments

Recently, I watched the movie Alice Through the Looking Glass.  I’d seen the previews, and it looked amazing, and it did not disappoint.  There were so many great quotes in that movie that I remembered from the first, and it got me thinking about the books, and how Lewis Carroll was probably either crazy or a genius (or both).

That being said, I’ve never actually read any of Lewis Carroll’s books (*gasp, sob*) so I can’t actually say for sure yet.  It actually slightly upsets me that I’ve watched the movies and not gotten around to reading the books, but oh well, I guess I’ll just have to make some time for them in the future (*goes to Goodreads and adds Alice in Wonderland to my TBR*).  Even though I haven’t read the books, I started googling Alice quotes, and found so many really great ones that it was hard to pick out just one.  After a lot of debate, I chose this one:

“It’s no use going back to yesterday, because I was a different person then.” – Alice in Wonderland, Lewis Carroll

In case you’ve been living under a rock, Alice in Wonderland is about a little girl who falls through a rabbit hole and has tons of adventures with her newfound friends (mostly animals) in a world of magic and mystery.  If I were to guess (let me know if I’m right), I would say that this quote is about Alice when she was trying to time travel, or figure out how to get back home or something.  That being said, I actually have no idea.

I personally loved this quote, because I absolutely hate it when someone calls me out on something that happened a long time ago, or believes that I’ll react the same now as I did last year, or even a few months ago.  We all grow up all the time, and it’s impossible to go back to someone that we aren’t anymore.

Even if you’re not trying to “change” or become a better person, per say, all of the events of our life accumulate to shape who we are, and each interaction changes us slightly.  Even starting this blog, something nobody in my “real” life knows about, has changed me and managed to give me so many different diverse perspectives that I wouldn’t have otherwise.

There’s no use trying to go back and recall who I was a year ago, or assume that someone else will react in the same way that they would have a year ago.  This is why it is so important to maintain friendships constantly, because you’ll find that people grow and change and suddenly there’s no place for you in their life anymore, and that sucks.

This quote really spoke to me, and so i hope that it does the same for the rest of you guys.  And, it doesn’t hurt that it is from Alice in Wonderland, one of the most amazingly movies (and hopefully books) that ever was.
