OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG TODAY IS THE DAY THAT I AM OFFICIALLY GRADUATING HIGH SCHOOL AND MOVING ON TO THE REAL WORLD AKA COLLEGE AKA THE PLACE ALL ADULTS SAY IS THE ONLY GOOD TIME OF YOUR LIFE BEFORE THE REAL REAL WORLD AHHHHHH HOW IS THIS HAPPENING.
(if you couldn’t bare to read the caps, I’m graduating TODAY!!)
So yes, my high school career is officially coming to a close, and I’m not really sure what to expect. After all, I have quite literally been doing the same thing every second of my life until right now. When I’m FREEEEEEEEEEE. (yes that was a HP reference)
In honor of my graduation, I decided to write about books that take place in High school, so that if any of my fellow graduates get school-sick (which I doubt, but you never know) you can always return to the comfort of high school *eye roll* through literature. YAY!
TWILIGHT is perhaps one of the most teenage lovesick books of all time, Twilight does indeed take place in a high school. It features classic high school drama, relationships, and *cue dramatic music* VAMPIRES! Plus, there’s 4 books in the series so you can just keep reliving it over and over again, becoming caught up in the drama of DYING WHEN YOUR TRUE LOVE WON’T LOVE YOU BACK and also pining over one guy while still managing to lead on another, it’s fabulously high school.
CARRIE is an attempt to relive all of your high school worst nightmares in a sick, Stephen King sort of way. Trigger Warnings for bullying galore, if you’re ever in need of a more positive outlook on your own high school experience, reading about the worst one possible will definitely help that. And as a bonus, if you miss high school and then read this, you will be guaranteed to not want to go back.
I only read the first book of the PRIVATE SERIES, and that was in middle school, and I was sort of scarred by what I read because I was an innocent child. I think it’s an upper YA novel, but it stars 15 year olds at a boarding school where everyone is rich and the world basically revolves around these pretty, popular girls. It’s classic high school but with a darker twist. I sort of want to go back and read these now that I won’t be disgusted by sexual interactions (honestly it could have been super quick and not even detailed but I was in 6th grade so like don’t judge please lol)
STARGIRL is a book about a homeschooler, and I think she ends up going to the high school, and then she is considered weird and abnormal and it talks a lot about how there’s a “hive mentality” to high schools and also about being true to yourself. It’s been a while so I can’t really get any more specific, but Jerry Spinelli is fabulous and I remember really loving this book when I was younger.
LOOKING FOR ALASKA is perhaps the only book by John Green that I really truly enjoyed. I mean, The Fault in Our Stars was good too, but not as good and after I read both everything just got repetitive and sucky. But Looking for Alaska was so powerful to me. It mostly revolves around this pretty, eccentric girl named Alaska that is totally screwed up and manages to screw up Miles, the main character, as well. Then she disappears and that screws him up even more. But I loved it. I am drawn towards fucked up characters on the verges of their next mental breakdowns (SEE: Love of Camille Preaker and also Allegra and Lane Roanoke) so I might not be the best one to judge.
VAMPIRE ACADEMY books are super fabulous because the MCs are willing to just go do whatever they need to save the world, and it’s a really interesting vampire meets training camp meets school dynamic that I love, because honestly fantasy is amazing and training camp books (SEE: Divergent, Harry Potter) are my favorites of all times because I think it’s really cool to see them go through stuff and learn and all that good stuff. And the characters were SUPER FAB so there’s nothing not to like. I binge read every single one of these books in a 2 week period, which is super fast for me, so you all should fly through them and be in love.
What are your favorite books that take place in high school? Are you graduating this year? Is college the real world? Let me know–

~ Now Venture out and Change the World ~
Congrats on graduating! 🙂 I just finished college about a month ago, so I’m going to be a part of the REAL REAL WORLD very soon (in July, because I got a job) and it is so scary!
I honestly loved my college experience, even though the course I did was something I had to choose because of my sucky performance in the entrance exams (the Indian education system is very different. I shall complain about it in a new post soon). I found my groove somewhere in my third year and I made some good friends. 😊
I hope you enjoy yours throughout though. Good luck! And it is the last time to have fun before you enter the dark, problematic world (the people who told you that weren’t kidding), so make sure you set aside some time to do the things you love. 🙂
I have only read the Twilight series on that list. I enjoyed it back in high school, but upon re-reading as an older, more experienced reader, I could point out all the problems and it just wasn’t a favourite anymore. But even back then I never quite liked Bella. 😐
This is a very well put-together list, but I’m probably not going to read any of them. High school was a less positive experience for me than college, even though I won a lot of accolades for my hard work. It’s a time of my life I usually visit in my nightmares, so none of this will go on my TBR, sadly. 🙁 I hope you enjoyed your journey though! 🙂

Well w! I didn’t know you were so young! I’m so old, lol! Congrats to you girl!!
When I was in high school, there wasn’t really YA. It was just beginning to become what it is now. Harry Potter was published when I was in middle school if you can believe it! I remember writing a paper about book censorship and people were denouncing the book bc of “witchcraft.”
Times have changed and books have gotten so much better! I can’t wait until you’re looking back and thinking the same thing!
