It wouldn’t be the new year without a wave of new movies coming out both in-theaters and directly home to your television screens. There’s so many incredible movies coming out in January and February of this year! This list includes movies you’ll have to go to the cinema to see (at least at first), as well as Netflix Hulu, and Amazon originals. Yay for platform diversity!

The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F**k

Release Date: January 4th, 2023

Where to Watch: In-Theaters

Genre: Documentary

I read The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck by Mark Manson early last year and enjoyed it. My biggest issue with the content was, overall, the fact that it most definitely could have been summed up in a blog post. Apparently I was wrong, however, because Manson feels he has more to say and has created a documentary by the same name to talk about it. This is a limited theatrical release, and I have to assume that it will come out on streaming eventually, but overall I find the entire thing ridiculous and am excited to see the reviews roll in.

M3GAN

Release Date: January 6th, 2023

Where to Watch: In-Theaters

Genre: Horror / Sci-fi

If you were on the internet at any point over the last few weeks, you already know that M3GAN has taken over as a queer icon. M3GAN, an artificial intelligence doll designed to protect and play with the child in her care, goes rogue when she decides that the only way to protect 8-year old Cady (Violet McGraw) is to hurt everyone else. Plus, she has some pretty brilliant dance moves.

The Drop

Release Date: January 13th, 2023

Where to Watch: Hulu

Genre: Comedy

I am slightly confused by the fact that this Hulu original is marked as a 2022 release while not coming out until January 13th (see movie cover on the right for more evidence). Nonetheless, it looks absolutely adorable! The concept of the movie is that a happy couple drops their friend’s baby during an “otherwise picturesque” wedding weekend. Apparently, this was a lot more traumatic for the adults than it was for the child, and I for one cannot wait to find out why.

Dog Gone

Release Date: January 13th, 2023

Where to Watch: Netflix

Genre: Biography / Drama

I am including this movie in the lineup solely because I know my mother would be devastated to miss it; this movie is quite literally for her. Based on a true story, Dog Gone takes us on a father/son adventure on the Appalachian trail as they attempt to find their lost dog. I’d never heard of this story before seeing the movie, and I am vaguely confused how walking down the trail would help anyone find their dog, but I can already tell that this dog movie is sure to make me cry.

Jethica

Release Date: January 13th, 2023

Where to Watch: In-Theaters

Genre: Drama / Thriller

This thriller looks so incredibly good! Jessica (Ashley Denise Robinson) is being stalked and is forced to find help from “beyond the grave” in order to evade him and ensure her safety for good. In 2022 this movie won awards at the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival, the Lausanne Underground Film & Music Festival, and the Santa Fe International Film Festival. I’m looking forward to having the opportunity to watch such a clearly well made thriller centering women!

You People

Release Date: January 27th, 2023

Where to Watch: Netflix

Genre: Comedy

This movie is said to explore “modern love” starring Eddie Murphy and Jonah Hill. This is sure to be absolutely hilarious, and I’m excited to see how it comes out. This is an all-star cast of comedians, and the trailer made me laugh out loud. Hill is on a quest to win over the parents of his girlfriend, and it doesn’t appear to be going well. I can’t wait to watch!

Shotgun Wedding

Release Date: January 27th, 2023

Where to Watch: Amazon Prime

Genre: Romantic Comedy

This romantic comedy has nearly the exact same cover as The Lost City, a movie which I cannot say I enjoyed. The plot appears to be a mix of this film and Ticket to Paradise, with a couple attending a destination wedding only to be abducted. I have high hopes for Shotgun Wedding, if only because of my love of Josh Duhamel and Jennifer Coolidge.

Magic Mike’s Last Dance

Release Date: February 10th, 2023

Where to Watch: In-Theaters

Genre: Romance / Drama

Magic Mike was such a great movie, and Magic Mike XXL was even better. That being said, my expectations are HIGH for this third and final addition to the Magic Mike trilogy. Salma Hayek and Channing Tatum are both so hot; I cannot wait to see them dance on stage. Plus, I’ve heard that there’s a 30 minute long choreographed dance scene at one point, which is thrilling!

Emily

Release Date: February 17th, 2023

Where to Watch: In-Theaters

Genre: Drama

I love Emily Mackey from her role in Sex Education! I can’t wait to see her in this completely different role, showing off some of her other acting talents. This movie is based on the true story of Emily Brontë, a writer who had a troubled life and died young. I love seeing the lives of female writers portrayed on-screen, and this is sure to delight.

Cocaine Bear

Release Date: February 24th, 2023

Where to Watch: In-Theaters

Genre: Dark Comedy / Thriller

What is this movie. I do not know the answer. Based on a true story, Cocaine Bear is about a bear that quite literally consumes a gigantic amount of cocaine. Then, a group of people have to hunt him down before he goes on a killing spree. This looks ridiculous, but it’s coming out in theaters and I will eventually be watching it.
