So I just came back from the library, and as always, I headed straight to the used-books sale bin.  I couldn’t help it.  I’m literally standing in a building filled with free books, and I have to choose the ones that cost money.  Anyways, I came back with two super awesome books, and a book for my Kindle.  Then, I got a copy of another book from my school to read, and I’m so excited!  So, here’s today’s book haul:

Paperback:

To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee –> $0.50

The Good Good Pig, by Sy Montgomery –> $0.50

Invisible Man, by Ralph Ellison –> Free!

Kindle:

Toughness: Developing True Strength On and Off the Court, by Jay Bilas –> $9.99

I’ve already read TKAM twice, but this copy was so pretty that I couldn’t resist buying it.  I am obsessed with different covers for books, and love it when new copies have even better covers than the original– and hate it when they get worse (*cough cough* movie covers).  I would highly recommend this book to anyone.  It is about the life of a girl named Scout and her family’s struggle with racism during the 60s.  It’s amazing.  And, Go Set a Watchman came out, so there’s a sequel/prequel!

The Good Good Pig is, I think, a true story.  I haven’t read it yet, so here’s the Goodreads summary:

A naturalist who spent months at a time living on her own among wild creatures in remote jungles, Sy Montgomery had always felt more comfortable with animals than with people. So she gladly opened her heart to a sick piglet who had been crowded away from nourishing meals by his stronger siblings. Yet Sy had no inkling that this piglet, later named Christopher Hogwood, would not only survive but flourish–and she soon found herself engaged with her small-town community in ways she had never dreamed possible. Unexpectedly, Christopher provided this peripatetic traveler with something she had sought all her life: an anchor (eventually weighing 750 pounds) to family and home.

The Good Good Pig celebrates Christopher Hogwood in all his glory, from his inauspicious infancy to hog heaven in rural New Hampshire, where his boundless zest for life and his large, loving heart made him absolute monarch over a (mostly) peaceable kingdom. At first, his domain included only Sy’s cosseted hens and her beautiful border collie, Tess. Then the neighbors began fetching Christopher home from his unauthorized jaunts, the little girls next door started giving him warm, soapy baths, and the villagers brought him delicious leftovers. His intelligence and fame increased along with his girth. He was featured in USA Today and on several National Public Radio environmental programs. On election day, some voters even wrote in Christopher’s name on their ballots.

But as this enchanting book describes, Christopher Hogwood’s influence extended far beyond celebrity; for he was, as a friend said, a great big Buddha master. Sy reveals what she and others learned from this generous soul who just so happened to be a pig–lessons about self-acceptance, the meaning of family, the value of community, and the pleasures of the sweet green Earth. The Good Good Pig provides proof that with love, almost anything is possible.

Invisible Man is, I believe, a book written pre-civil rights movement about a black man who believes himself to be invisible to the white folk, and his struggle for self identity.  I heard it’s really powerful, but slow– I’ll let you know how that turns out.

Toughness is a book written by a basketball player about how to stay mentally strong while you play, since that is the most important part.  It was recommended to me by my basketball coach, and $10 later I own it, so hopefully it will turn out worthwhile.

That’s all for my Book Haul, it wasn’t much but I’m hoping to get the chance to read them all soon, and I got an amazing cover while I’m at it!  Christmas is coming up, and I have some extra cash, so I want to know what books you guys have on your TBR shelf.  Let me know!
