March is Women’s History Month! In honor of women’s history, I’ve decided to write a list of some of the movies by female directors that I’ve watched over the course of the past year! Unfortunately, the odds are still incredibly stacked against women in the movie industry. Most movies, even ones that tell women’s stories, are directed by men! Not these thirteen, though.

Your Place Or Mine

Director: Aline Brosh Mckenna

Release Year: 2023

Genre: Romantic Comedy

Letterboxd

If you’re looking for a cute friends to lovers story, this is the one for you! The chemistry isn’t super there, but most of it takes place long distance and the in person scenes are adorable.

The Drop

Director: Sarah Adina Smith

Release Year: 2022

Genre: Satire / Drama

Letterboxd

I honestly still don’t really know what’s going on in this movie. It’s a deep case study on human beings and the way they react to things going moderately wrong. It’s a satire, but it doesn’t go all the way there, and that makes it interesting to watch.

Love and Leashes

Director: Park Hyun-Jin

Release Year: 2022

Genre: Romantic Comedy

Letterboxd

This movie was so freaking cute! I am obsessed with romance, as you can probably tell by the number of romantic movies on this list, and this one had such a fun twist. Love and Leashes is about finding love when you have to hide a part of yourself— the fact that you’re into BDSM.

The People We Hate at the Wedding

Director: Claire Scanlon

Release Year: 2022

Genre: Romantic Comedy

Letterboxd

I absolutely loved this movie! It was such an absolutely adorable little romcom, and Kristen Bell was incredible in that role.

Don’t Worry Darling

Director: Olivia Wilde

Release Year: 2022

Genre: Drama / Horror / Futuristic

Letterboxd | Review

You all know I had mixed feelings about this movie, but I think had there not been so much noise surrounding the release, I in fact would have enjoyed it much more! It was an exciting horror / drama that felt a little too close to being possible.

Do Revenge

Director: Jennifer Kaytin Robinson

Release Year: 2022

Genre: High School Drama

Letterboxd | Review

This movie was so fun and cute! It was a high school drama about a popular girl befriending a much less popular girl, only not all is as it seems. The acting and the clothing in this film were both impeccable!

Look Both Ways

Director: Wanuri Kahiu

Release Year: 2022

Genre: Romance

Letterboxd | Review

This was a lighthearted Netflix romcom, and if that’s what you’re looking for this is the movie for you. Lili Reinhart is incredible in both parts she plays, and it’s a fun tale of what would be different if you have a child too young.

Crush

Director: Sammi Cohen

Release Year: 2022

Genre: Romance

Letterboxd | Review

I love an enemies to lovers arc, and this movie delivered perfectly! There are rumors of off-screen drama between the cast, and if that’s the case the tension came through on the screen. They used that energy to be convincing enemies, and didn’t let it get in the way of when they became lovers.

Fear Street

Director: Leigh Janiak

Release Year: 2021

Genre: Horror

Letterboxd

The Fear Street trilogy was so good! If you enjoy horror movies that take place over decades, with a twisting cast and lore that actually makes sense, you should most definitely watch these films! I love that rather than making one extraordinarily long movie there were three shorter ones, and it certainly served the plot.

Hustlers

Director: Lorene Scafaria

Release Year: 2019

Genre: Crime / Drama

Letterboxd

I watched this movie with my friend while she got high for the first time, and my memories of it are inextricably tied to that. I love when women scam men and get away with it! Women winning (and suffering) against the odds is the perfect movie to end a Women’s History Month list.
